Fifth Grade

Fifth Grade

Curriculum at a Glance

Fifth Grade is a fun and exciting year! My goal is to create engaging and innovative lessons to include the Common Core Standards in each content area.  New technologies are frequently used and embraced in the fifth grade classroom.  The classroom SMART Board and ELMO are used daily. An iPad and SMART Response clickers are also integrated to lessons.

Although each subject has their own exciting units, Reading class incorporates Literature Units.  Fifth Grade reads, “Wonder” by R.J. Palacio, “Island of the Blue Dolphins” by Scott O’Dell and “Esperanza Rising” by Pam Munoz Ryan. The Literature Units give the students an opportunity to read novels as a whole group, small group, and individually. Students are given time to have a “book talk”. At the end of the novel, students become the authors and write their own final chapters to each story. Health is also studiedone quarter of this year. Students learn about nutrition, physical activity, personal health, and their growing bodies.
