MARY JO NYERS

Mary Jo Nyers
As a graduate of St. Nicholas School, I am "at home" working where I decided, long ago, that teaching was what I wanted to do when I grew up. I attended Cardinal Mooney and Youngstown State University. I have completed graduate work, seminars and workshops through YSU, Kent State University, Walsh University and have taken continuing education courses through the Diocese of Youngstown.

I have been a classroom teacher for over 30 years in grades K, 1, 2, 6, 7, and 8. When my own three children were young, I did substitute teaching in all grades, K-8.
In addition to St. Nick',. I have taught at St. Luke, Holy Family, and the Ursuline Pre-school and Kindergarten.

The last 21 years of my teaching career have been in Kindergarten. Every grade has its particular qualities and attributes, but Kindergarten is in a class by itself. I find it rewarding and fulfilling. The children come on many different levels, some with fears or insecurities about being in a new 'big' place and maybe not knowing many of their classmates. As the year progresses, each child blossoms into a secure, responsible child who is learning and working to be the best they can be.

One of my goals is to see each child love school, to walk into our classroom feeling happy and safe, knowing that they are going to have a good day. I see them mold into a classroom family that is caring and loving. Kindergartners reward me every day with such comments as 'School is fun!' 'I love this place!' and my favorite: 'Our clock moves a lot faster than the one in preschool.'

God bless them! And God bless the parents who choose to send them to our school!
