WELCOME TO THE 2010-2011 SCHOOL YEAR

Our doors open on Wednesday, August 25th as we welcome Grades 1- 8 back to school. Kindergarten begins on Wednesday, September 1st. School begins at 7:55 AM and dismisses at 2:30 PM.

SCHOOL MASS
Our first school mass is scheduled for Wednesday, September 1st at 9:00AM. Please join us as we begin our school year thanking God for our many blessings.

NEW BEGINNINGS
We are excited to begin the 2010 – 2011 school year. You will see new faces among the faculty and students! At this writing, we have approximately 31 new students.

Joining our faculty and staff this year are: Miss Paula Davis, as our school nurse, who will be available from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM daily, Mr. Justin Gough as our Title I Teacher, Miss Lauren Johnson as our Music Teacher, and Mrs. Katie Harold as our 8th Grade Teacher who will also teach English to 6th and 7th Grade.

You will be introduced to our new faculty members at our first Moms’ and Dads’ Club Meeting on Thursday, August 26th at 7:00PM in the lower church. We ask that every family be represented as we discuss the new year and planning for events.

EIGHTH GRADE CONFIRMATION
There is a parent meeting on Sunday, September 12th, at 7:00 PM in the church. Every child making their Confirmation must have a parent/guardian at this meeting. Please contact Miss Stephanie Tarajcak, DRE, through the Parish Office ahead of time if there is a conflict with this time.

OPEN BOOK NIGHT
Open Book Night has been a tradition at Saint Nicholas School for many years. It is an evening where Parents/Guardians are invited to their child’s classroom to meet the teacher and get a glimpse of the coming year. The teachers are eager to meet you and establish a relationship of teachers and parents working together to provide a wonderful learning experience for this school year. Since 6th, 7th, and 8th grades change classes, we would ask that first you meet in the lunch room on the assigned day to briefly hear from all your child’s teachers, then you will go to the pertinent classroom.

He will then meet with parents of interested students on Tuesday, September 14th at 6:30 PM in the lunch room. Students will be given the chance to sell pies to pay for their band fee. Many band members use this opportunity to pay their entire band fee.

MOMS’ AND DADS’ CLUB
We invite all parents to be active in our Moms’ & Dads’ Club. All the activities sponsored by the club benefit all the children. Your children love to see you involved with school projects. They are just as proud of you as you are of them! Come around, be active in their school. Show your commitment to the future of Saint Nicholas School. Together we are the difference!

DIOCESAN CHILD PROTECTION POLICY
In order to volunteer at the school, you must be in compliance with the Diocesan Child Protection Policy. There is an In-Service planned at Saint Nicholas on Tuesday, August 31st from
7:00-9:00 PM in the Religious Education Conference Room. There is a form enclosed with details. This policy is in place for the protection and safety of your children. We need your help at school ~ please look into attending if you have not already done so.

TECHNOLOGY
There are big improvements in our technology program. New Smart Boards will be installed in 5 classrooms, new Elmo Document Camera/Projectors in classrooms, Clickers for testing/learning will be shared by all classes, and more computers from Struthers will be in the computer lab, library, and classrooms. There will be security cameras installed in the school. Mr. Kowalczyk and Mr. Hermez have been working hard to keep us moving in technology! A special thanks to Struthers Board of Education for donating computers to us.

PARISH WEBSITE
The Parish website is www.stnickstruthers.org
Once there, you will be able to click on school for detailed information and links of interest! We are in the “process” of updating now!

OptionC
OptionC is a communication system between school and parents/guardians. We joined OptionC at the end of the school year and have been working with representatives to learn the many functions of the program. Many families have provided us with email addresses. We will provide you with the information needed for you to utilize the program in the coming weeks.

MONTHLY BULLETINS
Monthly bulletins will be sent home with the oldest in the family for now. Please sign the envelope on the coordinating line and return the next day. This family envelope will be used all year.

DRESS DOWN DAYS
Earnings from dress down days are donated to different charitable organizations and worthy causes. Appropriate relaxed clothing for school must be followed on these days.

SCRIP
Every family is asked to support our Scrip Program by purchasing $100 a month (not necessarily $100 each month but in the end $1,200 a year). The easiest way to describe how the program works ~ it’s like buying gift cards. For every gift card we sell, the company gives us a percentage. It cost you nothing extra. You receive the entire value of what you pay. Many cards are in stock and you can get them the day you send your money in. A form is enclosed in this packet for your convenience. If you need it immediately, contact the parish office to make sure it is in stock. Anything can be ordered in a matter of days if you can wait. This system will get you organized and planning ahead.

CAMPBELL SOUP LABELS AND BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION
These are on-going programs that help support schools. We collect for both programs year round. Please clip and send in.

ABSENTEE
If your child is absent, you must phone the school before 10:00AM to report their absenteeism. If you request homework, it will be on the homework table near the Nurse’s station by 2:15 or sent home with another student if specified.
Please send an absentee note with your child upon returning to school.

SPORTS PHYSICAL/INSURANCE FORMS
Athletes must return physicals and insurance forms before participating in any sport program. This law/ruling is state, diocesan and school. All documents must be on file in the school for each participant.
IF SCHOOL IS CANCELED, ALL SPORTS PROGRAMS ARE CANCELED INCLUDING PRACTICE.

SCHOOL CLOSING
If Saint Nicholas School is closed, it will be listed individually on the local television stations.

SCHOOL ENTRANCE

All cars enter from Creed Street side of the school, drive around the back (between garage and kindergarten play area) and come up along the side of the school (church parking lot) to drop students off in the morning. All cars and buses exit from the Fifth Street church parking lot.

FOR THE SAFETY OF ALL CHILDREN, PLEASE WAIT YOUR TURN IN THE TRAFFIC LINE. DO NOT PASS CARS OR BUSSES TO HURRY OUT. THE SAFETY OF ALL THE CHILDREN IS OUR FIRST PRIORITY.

Bus riders will load from this door at the end of the day also. Car riders will exit from the back of the school and walk to their cars. Cars are to park in the parking lot area behind the church, near Tiny Tots and the Parish Hall. Once leaving, please drive slowly. SAFETY FIRST!

BOOKS COVERED
All books are to be covered by Monday, August 30th. Brown grocery bags seem to hold up best. If you are using the stretch cloth covers, please make sure they fit the book. THEY ARE NOT ONE SIZE FITS ALL! If they are too small they break the binding on the books, because students MAKE THEM FIT!

IN-SERVICE
There is no school on Friday, September 3rd. The faculty will be at St. Michael’s Church in Canton, Ohio with Bishop Murry as he celebrates Mass and bestows his blessings on the opening of the 2010-2011 school year with all the Diocesan schools.

LUNCH PROGRAM
All students will have lunch/recess from 11:30 – 12:10 PM. We do need help with serving lunch and playground duty. If you are in compliance with the Diocesan Child Protection Policy and are able to donate some time, please contact the school office.

You will need to send a lunch and drink until the hot lunch program begins on Tuesday, September 7th. An order form will be sent home when it becomes available to us.

There is a free and reduced lunch form in this packet that needs to be completed and returned by August 30th as applicable.

FEES
As a matter of convenience, the Parish Office is accepting Visa, MasterCard and Discover as a method of payment for tuition and other payments that may occur. Please contact the Parish Office for more details.

FORMS
All forms included in the first take-home packet need to be filled out and returned to their classroom teachers by Monday, August 30th.

We are anticipating a very exciting and positive school year. It is a new beginning ~ I hope everybody is coming back re-energized and ready to
make this their best school year yet!
